Giovanni Francesco Camocio (1501-1575)

"Book and print dealer and publisher. Active in Venice. His shop was ‘Al segno della Piramide’ at S. Lio. He described himself as ’libraro’ in 1556 (as witness, 24 October 1556, at trial of Alvise di Pietro ASV, Sant’Uffizio, 24 October 1556). October 2 1567, the Senate granted Camocio a privilege covering devotional subjects, portraits and maps. Another privilege granted to him by the Senate on October 12, 1568. 9 September 1568, Camoci (along with the engraver Domenico Zenoi) was fined by the Esecutori contro la Bestemmia for having a set of indecent sonnets with obscene prints interleaved.
Books published 1552-1572. He published religious and secular figural prints, ornament prints, portraits and especially maps (Gallo argued that a date of 1575 underlay an altered date on a map of Europe with Camocio’s address). Published engravings by, among others, Paolo Forlani, Martino Rota, ’Renatus’ and Domenico Zenoi. Many of his plates may later have become the property of Donato Bertelli." - https://www.britishmuseum.org/research/search_the_collection_database/term_details.aspx?bioId=92545, 29.11.2018
