The women, who had come out to tend Christ’s grave, are the first to experience the miracle of his resurrection. According to St. Matthew’s Gospel (28, 1-10), he gave them a message for the disciples. But the composition is determined by the idea of “Noli me tangere” (Do not touch me), which comes from St. John’s Gospel (20, 14-18), where Mary Magdalene first of all took Christ for the gardener. The lively movement, the structured sense of composition, vigorous brushstrokes and glowing colour give this early work the Baroque excitement that is typical of the great Flemish artists.| Prestel Museum Guides - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017
