Ethnologisches Museum Sammlung Gonzalo Ramos Ruiz

Sammlung Gonzalo Ramos Ruiz

"Um 1880-1882 verkauft ein Herr Gonzalo Ramos Ruiz seine Sammlung kolumbianischer Altertümer an Herrn Randall. Dieser war ehemals amerikanischer Konsul in Barranquilla. Die Sammlung kostete $12.000. Randall versuchte vergeblich, diese Sammlung in New York weiterzuverkaufen.

"In Bogotá Bastian likewise enjoyed the support of the German diplomats assigned there. Through the embassy's secretary, Harassowith, Bastian was "oriented on the relations in Bogotá, as well as the collections there, and could effectuate the purchase of the largest [collection] belonging to Mr. Gonzalo Ramos himself" ("über die Verhältnisse in Bogotá, sowie die dortigen Sammlungen orientirt, und konnte den Ankauf der grössten derselben, Herrn Gonzalo Ramos gehörig, effectuiren")(BI:298). Further augmentative information about the history of this collection is supplied by the acquisition files in the Ethnological Museum: Ramos Ruiz had first offered his collection to the Colombian state for the National Museum, but without success. Thereupon, in 1882 he sold the collection to William W. Randall, United States consul in Sabanilla near Barranquilla, who in turn sought to sell the convolute at a profit, offering it to various United States institutions and private collectors. With its sale to W. C. Borlase, the collection ultimately arrived in London. Bastian asked Bendix Koppel, a merchant whom he had met during his trip to Bogotá and who was in London at the time, to assess the collection. As the assessment was recommendable, [13] Bastian asked Rudolf Virchow to initiate negotiations on purchase with Borlase's agent Bryce Wright while in London. As many as thirteen years passed before the transaction was finally agreed upon and completed in May 1888 (Botero 2006:158). ...

Botero, in print. Note: the collection Gonzalo Ramos Ruiz corresonds with that of Randall-Sokoloski Bryce-Wright."
