Description

JF 27.06.2018

This equestrian figure was probably the final of an Iyase's staff of office. In the Benin Kingdom, the Iyase was the most important leader of the military and was often represented astride a horse. Only the highest ranking warriors of the kingdom wore tunics, like the one on this figure, with representations of bells and the heads of leopards. The oba, or king, was known as the "leopard of the house". According to oral tradition, the heads of leopards, however, were symbols of the warriors through whom the oba acted.

A small group of ivory staffs from Benin are known, which depict the Iyases of Benin in a manner similar to the figure here. They were used by the Iyases as staffs of office, which indicated their status and position, as well as the obligations of their office. JF 27.06.2018
