Mächtig erhebt sich die dreifigurige Kreuzigungsgruppe vor einer Ansicht der Stadt Jerusalem. Die frisch erfasste Landschaft mit den fernen, teils verschneiten Gebirgsketten sowie den zahllosen Einzelheiten im Mittelgrund bezeugt die außergewöhnliche Qualität des Gemäldes, das allerdings stark unter der im 19. Jahrhundert erfolgten Übertragung auf Leinwand gelitten hat. Their gestures and expressions reveal intense sorrow; their eyes are red from weeping. Beyond the stony place of crucifixion rises manytowered Jerusalem with the massive temple, on the left next to Christ. The freshly observed landscape with a detailed view of the city, distant mountain ranges partly covered in snow and countless details in the middle ground—including crossing paths, bare trees and a windmill— testify to the outstanding quality of the painting, which however suffered a great deal when it was transferred to canvas in the 19th century.
