Zunehmend konzentrierten sich Künstler auf Spezialgebiete wie Winterszenen, Gebirgslandschaften oder Seestücke, zu denen auch die schlichten Darstellungen von Binnengewässern zählten. Salomon van Ruysdael, der Onkel des berühmten Jacob van Ruisdael, setzt in seinem Gemälde den Horizont hier so tief an, dass der wolkenreiche Himmel drei Viertel der Bildfläche bestimmt. Während Boote den verdunkelten Vordergrund dominieren, rahmt der Deich mit einem dahinter aufragendem Kirchturm den schräg in die Bildtiefe verlaufenden Kanal.
