Beschreibung
Jahrhundert so beliebten französischen Konversationsstücke. A patrician family has assembled in their magnificent living-room. The fireplace in ancient style, the gold leather wallcovering, the lavishly detailed doorframe and the large paintings are all signs of prosperity. The family has been identified as that of Dr. Gillis Valckenier (1623–1680), the mayor of Amsterdam. He, as the head of the family, is majestically enthroned by the table. His son is placed at his side, with a parrot sitting on his outstretched left arm. The lady of the house is surrounded by her daughters, and the nurse on the right is holding the youngest member of the family. The dog, a symbol of faithfulness, is a frequent attribute on pictures of families and married couples. After Metsu moved to Amsterdam (in about 1656), ter Borch became his most important model, and he followed his pictures in both choice of subject and composition. His earlier, more dynamically structured social scenes gave way as in the Berlin picture to a more static and less subtle arrangement of figures. The painting clearly owes a great deal to French taste, which was becoming more influential in Holland, in its refined application of paint and wealth of decorative detail. The borders between portrait and genre painting have started to break down. With this new approach, Metsu is anticipating the French conversation pieces that were so popular in the 18th century. | Claudia Banz (Prestel-Führer 2010)
