Womöglich ist dies eine Ursache des rechts vor der Herberge entbrannten Streits: Ein Verletzter liegt bereits am Boden, während eine Reihe von bewaffneten Männern aufeinander losgeht. Wirtshausbesucher verfolgen das blutige Geschehen in sicherem Abstand durch die Fenster. Links im Bild zeigt die vielfigurige Darstellung einen Gefesselten, der von einem Pferd gezogen wird. Ein herbeigeeilter Mönch hat ihm ein Holzkreuz in die Hände gedrückt. Der aus Mechelen stammende Hans Bol war Spezialist für kleinformatige, figurenreiche Landschaften, die in der Tradition Pieter Brueghels d.
