Vanitas, lateinisch für „Eitelkeit“, war ein zentrales Konzept in Literatur und bildender Kunst des Barock. In der niederländischen Malerei bildete sich mit den Vanitasstilleben im 17. Jahrhundert eine eigene Untergattung heraus. Immer neue Kombinationen von symbolisch besetzten Gegenständen gemahnten an die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und der irdischen Güter. Potter arrangiert hier vor einem großen Himmelsglobus einen Totenkopf, einen Geldsack und ein Stundenglas. Die davor aufgeschichteten Bücher und Papiere sind charakteristisch für die Leidener Ausprägung der Stillebenmalerei. Die Universitätsstadt galt als Hochburg der Wissenschaft und bildete zugleich ein Zentrum der Vanitasmalerei. Vanitas still-lifes evolved into an independent genre in 17th century Dutch art. Continually new combinations of symbolic objects developed, reminding of the transience of life and earthly belongings. Potter arranges a skull, a money bag and an hourglass in front of a large celestial globe. The layered books and papers are characteristic of the Leiden variant of still-life paintings. The city, with a large university, was considered to be the center of sciences and also of vanitas still-life painting.
