At the beginning of the 20th century, this Virgin and Child with Four Angels was considered one of the most remarkable works of the James Simon Cabinet in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum (today Bode Museum). This is a typical work of the Della Robbia workshop in glazed terracotta, a technique that gives the relief an exceptional brilliance. In May 1945, one of the depots of works of art of the Berlin Museums inexplicably burned twice, destroying thousands of works and devastating others, such as this relief, which has now become a poignant testimony to the destruction caused during the Second World War.
