Als Vorbild für die Kleinbronze diente die antike Statue des so genannten Antinous vom Belvedere (Vatikan), die Duquesnoy gemeinsam mit dem befreundeten Maler Nicolas Poussin studiert und vermessen hatte. Die Statue scheint sowohl für Poussin als auch für Duquesnoy mustergültig gewesen zu sein. Die Bronze reproduziert ein verschollenes Tonmodell, in dem Duquesnoy das fragmentarisch erhaltene antike Vorbild nach seinen Vorstellungen umgebildet hatte. In ihrer Proportionierung und dem raumgreifenden Aufbau ist die Bronze relativ weit vom einansichtigen und in strenger Statuarik komponierten Vorbild der Antike entfernt. Charakteristisch für Duquesnoys Statuette ist die bereits von Zeitgenossen an seinen Werken gelobte ›leggiadria‹ (Passeri), eine Leichtigkeit in der Bewegung, die vor allem durch das Standmotiv mit dem rhythmisch ausschwingenden Standbein und die entgegengesetzte Kopfdrehung erzielt wird.
