History: "In 1780 William Smith established a confectionery business in Fell Street, London, styled Smith & Co. In 1860 a fire destroyed the premises and the firm moved to 128-132 Borough High Street, Southwark, London where it remained until 1974. Samuel Smith introduced the manufacture of medicines to the firm an by 1914 the firm's liquorice production factory in Messina, Italy, was closed, and home production of spices and jams had ceased. During the Second World War contracts for Altoids were secured with the armed forces, and in 1948 the buisiness was incorporated as a limited liability company. ... In 1974 the company re-located from Southwark to Bridgend, and won the Queen's award for industry in the same year. Subsequently, the business was acquired by and American firm.
